Choosing a location for your family photo session doesn’t have to be difficult, nor expensive. While many locations do require paid permits for taking portraits on the property, there are many beautiful locations that are 100% free! Parks
State Parks, County Parks, Local Parks - they are EVERYWHERE! Take some time and visit the parks in your area. You may be surprised to find that they offer a variety of backdrop options - from open wide fields, to tree-lined paths and waterfront views - you are bound to find a location you love.
NOTE: While many parks do not require permits for professional photography, there are some that do (especially for wedding photography). Please be sure to check with the park administration/office before scheduling the session. Most post this information on their website.
Hiking Trails
There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails in NJ, most of which are completely free to use. I personally LOVE taking portraits along a wooded trail, and most trails also offer beautiful views, streams and waterfalls that offer a nice variation in backdrops.
TIP: For family portraits you will want to keep the trail difficulty very easy.
College Campuses
Have you ever visited a college campus? Most of them are quite stunning. Beautiful grounds, amazing architecture and very easy to get around. New Jersey has some gems.
NOTE: Many college campuses are open to the public and allow for photography, but it is important you check each college’s policies & restrictions regarding professional photography. For example, Princeton University does not allow photography near any of their residence halls and near certain buildings.
Streets
If you are looking for something a little different, search no further than the pavement around you! The streets are fantastic for portraits. Those leading lines make for some pretty awesome framing! I love finding low-traffic areas in Middlesex County to use and it’s a bonus when the street is lined with trees or greenery! An obvious warning of caution though - the number one priority is safety, so please be sure to always be aware of your surroundings.
The Beach
The beach is an obvious option for us NJ natives. The state has miles upon miles of shoreline to take advantage of. The trick is finding spots that are free to use! If you stay away from the popular beaches (Avalon, Seaside Heights, Ocean Grove, Long Beach Island, Wildwood, Brigantine, etc) or visit off-season, you will have plenty of free shoreline to use fee-free! Early Spring and Autumn are great times of the year for beach photos!
Think Outside The Box
The five location ideas listed are pretty straight forward, but I encourage you to think outside the box! Great portraits can be taken anywhere. Is there a location that is meaningful to you? If so, let your photographer know about it - see if they can make it work!
